I attend the Day of Remembrance every year. A wonderful transwoman, Tacy Renta, was the person who reached out to me and brought Mikki into the world rather than continue to languish at home.
Tacy, always the outrageous dresser, told me she was excited about going to her 25th high school reunion. Her school was an all-boys school! On her way home from a local bar (not gay) a car full of thugs who had been on a crime spree saw her walking home and decided to "have a little fun". As soon as they saw she was a transwoman they shot and killed her. After their arrest they showed no remorse about killing Tacy. They saw it as a justified action against a person who had no business living that way.
Her murder got the "usual" coverage, but as the impact hit the LGBT community the number of lives she touched turned out to be incredibly large. A week or so the City Paper and the Baltimore Sun wrote appreciations of her life and condemned such senseless murders. The city was moved to recognize the community and our new mayor is motivated to do more for our community. Why does the cost be so dear to motivate people to do the right thing?
